Many people, from respected film critics through to the paying movie goer thought that Johnny Depp’s portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow in the First Pirates of the Caribbean movie was the standout performance. The movies and merchandising have gone on to make plenty of dollars for the creators Walt Disney and made it one of the most profitable movie franchises ever.

Strangely enough the first film cast Jack Sparrow as a peripheral figure to the actual plot of the movie. He was a side kick to add comic relief to the main protagonists, notably Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann. Due to the success of the character partly envisaged and created by Depp, the second and third movies saw Sparrow as the main protagonist (or at least more integral to the plot).

Johnny Depp drew from many sources for his inspiration of Jack Sparrow. However the idea that the pirates of the golden age of piracy were like the rock stars of today was the main thread. Although this is quite a leap in imagination, it has certainly resonated with the fans.
