The Golden Age of piracy from approximately 1650 through to 1720 is pretty much the template for all the pirate books like Treasure Island through to modern day movies like the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
And in this vein, it is the inspiration for most of the pirate costumes you will find people dressing up in for special events like themed parties or Halloween. And by far the most popular costume for men is the pirate captain costume. In fact it is almost impossible to resist the urge to wear a silly hat, an eye patch, have pretend sword fights with your pals and say ‘arrrrr’ and ’shiver me timbers’ and silly things like that.
The pirate captain that we are most familiar with these days is, of course, Captain Jack Sparrow but he is based on the legendary Blackbeard, whose real name was Edward Teach. I say based, as Johnny Depp has obviously added a few ideas of his own to make the character more relevant to a modern audience (including using Keith Richards as the role model for his accent and general spirit of the character). So the pirate captain is essentially a rock star and has all the character traits you might expect of a strong personality. Jack Sparrow might be played for laughs in the movie but he has plenty of charm and some pretty strong views too.
Many pirate ships were run on a democratic principle according to the contemporary reports of the time. A captain had to be elected and was essentially judged on his performance. This meant how much loot was recovered from Spanish Galleons and other ships that were considered fair game to the pirates. It also involved how they ran the ship and their general leadership. So he (or she in some cases) had to have strong leadership qualities but also a fair amount of charisma to convince his crew mates that he was the right person for the job. This might seem hard to fathom as the legendary captains seemed to be pretty ruthless with the crew and foe alike. I imagine as they became more successful, a captain would become a law in his own right and pretty much rule as a dictator on the ship. But he would still have to retain his charisma or might find his rule subject to a mutiny. In fact a few pirate captains did suffer this fate and ended up visiting Davy Jones locker on a permanent basis.
So what makes a pirate captain costume –
In no particular order :
A Pirate Captains hat – let’s face it, only the captain is allowed a big hat, it’s a status symbol as such. The rest of the crew have to be happy with a bandanna at best.
Boots with large cuffs. Sturdy boots to withstand all the many adventures you will undertake. Not sure what the big cuffs are all about, probably to stop water getting on your feet (or should that be rum punch and malty beer)
A sash band and belt for tucking your cutlass and pistol into
Facial hair – the bigger the better, just don’t set it alight like Blackbeard used to.
Kick ass trousers and long length jacket.
A world weary pirate captain might sport an eye patch and hook.
A lonely pirate captain might have a chirpy parrot on their shoulder.
Typical Pirate captains you could dress up as :
Jack Sparrow
Blackbeard
Captain Hook from Peter Pan
Captain And Tenille (only joking….just checking if you’re paying attention !)
